Betsy’s love of creating living spaces was apparent since youth. Working through the puzzles of finding the best solutions of form and function can make such a difference in how people enjoy their day to day lives, families, celebrations and work.
She takes an Anthropological approach to her work- here is an excerpt from a Carolina Home + Garden article December 2015. “I really try to find out about the client’s history — where they’re from, if they’re a couple, a bit about their kids, and what they’re drawn to. I ask about favorite colors, books, and activities — vacations will tell you a lot about a family. I also plan for the client’s future needs, whether aging, additional children in the future, or other considerations. Then I let the space speak to me. I can pretty much see a space fully designed when I’m walking through it.”
Betsy’s years as an award-winning interior architectural designer include almost two decades in the Atlanta design community working on national and international hospitality and residential projects. There were Country Clubs and Disney Projects with Design Continuum, Inc.- International Hyatt Hotels with Hirsch-Bedner and Associates- Many of Atlanta’s finest restaurants with The Johnson Studio- and hospitality and residential projects with her own firm, BennettEdwards Interior Design. While in Santa Barbara, California she spent seven years working on projects of her own as well as for The Warner Group Architects with clients throughout the country- including Country Clubs and residential projects.
Since returning to the North Carolina Mountains Betsy Edwards Design has worked on 2 total renovations- the first a vacation home in the Champion Hills area, the second, a third generation family farmhouse on Asheville’s Beaver Dam Road.
Projects have included two new construction homes on the ocean in Gulf Stream, Florida. She developed the initial layouts and managed the projects coordination with the contractor. Millwork and detailing, lighting and electrical plans, plumbing and hardware as well as kitchen and bathroom layouts and cabinetry were designed. Finishes, systems, furnishings and window treatments were specified.
Current projects include- updating a home in Cliff’s Valley- Traveler’s Rest, South Carolina. Transforming a Craftsman bungalow in The Ramble, Biltmore Forest. The design of an 1800 square foot addition for an Orchard Home- including a new Kitchen, Family, Dining and Sunroom.
Born & raised in Montgomery, Alabama I was inspired throughout my childhood & early adult years by my father who built beautiful custom homes in stately southern settings. In following his work & spending summers visiting job sites with him I was exposed to countless outstanding projects which featured classic southern charm & timeless design. These foundations have carried over into my own design aesthetic & continue to inspire me daily.
As a graduate of Auburn University’s Interior Design program in 2010, I followed my heart to Telluride, Colorado, where I was mentored & worked under Bruce & Jodie Wright of One Architects, Inc. Our projects focused on mountain contemporary style with a restrained rustic edge that were both one of a kind & completely ageless. A stark contrast from my Southern roots, but none the less, great design is fully transcendent of style & time. When a home has been thoughtfully conceived and carefully executed it is known in the heart & carried in the spirit. There is no place quite like home, & I suppose a little piece of me will always remain deep in the heart of the San Juan Mountains.
As life happened & brought us back to Alabama in 2014 I continued my work in Interior Design under both architects & designers until once again our hearts brought us to the high country & we made our home right here in the Western North Carolina Mountains. As a mother of two boys & wife to one amazing fella, I work to be inspired for them. Thankful to the core for the opportunity to follow my dreams & own my very own interior design business I look forward to combining 10+ years experience into one incredible vision – Restrained Rustic Elegance with Whimsical Southern Charm. It is truly a blessing to curate environments where families create memories & shelter life, love, & all things dear to the heart. After all, it is the tiny details of our lives that make us who we are & so, it is the tiny details of our homes that make them a home! What an amazing gift to be given the opportunity to create such a special place in the lives of my clients! What joy it brings this little ole heart of mine!
